Letting Google know what your website is about is similar in many ways to letting a real human know what your website is about, with some subtle differences.
Google has many ways of determining what your website is about, so that they can present your website in the search results to people looking for what you have to offer. Headings are important, as well as keywords, and images, and sitemaps. You also need to submit your website’s sitemap to the Google Search Console for indexing.
Headings tell people what a page is about. It also tells Google what the page is about. In HTML there’s a difference between a paragraph and a heading. It might seem like a silly distinction to a human but for a Google crawl bot it’s an important distinction.
Keywords are important but not in the way they used to be. Meta tags are a thing of the past, and content is the future. If your page is supposed to be about underwater basket weaving, but you don’t have the phrase “underwater basket weaving” in the content of that page, or it’s only there once, how is Google supposed to be absolutely sure that somebody doing a search for “underwater basket weaving” would be interested in viewing your site?
Google’s crawl-bots can’t tell what an image is by “looking at it” like a human can. So how do they know what the image is? There are several ways, including the name of the image file, the image alt text, title and description.
